Captain America will soon have his biggest mission yet: saving the United States of America.
Wait.... what?!
In the upcoming Marvel comics series 1776, a "mysterious force" is trying to change the timeline - specifically, the founding of the United States back in 1776. That's when Captain America steps in, and he's calling in some reserves to help.

1776 is a new series from Marvel to be written by J. Michael Straczynski (Amazing Spider-Man, Thor) and drawn by the unique pairing of Ron Lim (Infinity Gauntlet, Silver Surfer) and Sean Damien Hill (Spirits of Vengeance, Luke Cage: City on Fire). This comes as the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States is imminent - in 2026, to be exact.
"Calamity strikes when a mysterious force dares to tamper with the sacred threads of history. CAPTAIN AMERICA and his formidable squad of Marvel heroes leap into action!" reads Marvel's description of 1776. "Their mission? To safeguard the founding of the United States of America! The fate of the nation hangs in the balance at the dawn of the Revolution, as these valiant heroes must navigate the treacherous waters of the past to ensure a future that remains untarnished."
This isn't the first time Marvel Comics has dove into the founding of the United States of America. In 1976's Captain America: Bicentennial Battles, co-creator Jack Kirby wisked Cap back to the 1770s where he teamed up with Benjamin Franklin and America's revolutionary forces - and among other things, inspired the design of the American Flag, with it being based on Cap's costume (which of course was based on the flag!).
In 1974's Giant-Size Fantastic Four #2, the team's mailman, Willy Lumpkin, was accidentally transported back to 1776, causing George Washington to be captured by British troops, affecting the timeline. Reed Richards and Johnny Storm had to come back in time to sort it all out, and mark Mr. Lumpkin as 'return to sender.'
That's in addition to a battle between Kang the Conqueror and this era's Moon Knight, a Skrull invasion that included them pretending to be Thomas Jefferson, a 1770s era Black Knight, and even some machinations from the immortal Gideon of the Externals.
1776 #1 (of 5) goes on sale on November 25.
