Actor Clancy Brown is one of the most versatile voices in movies and television today. Before voicing the iconic Mr. Krabs on SpongeBob SquarePants, Brown auditioned for the role of Goliath on the beloved animated show, Gargoyles. And while the part eventually went to Keith David, Brown’s audition was memorable because he stayed in character as the hulking nighttime warrior. At a panel at WonderCon celebrating the 30th anniversary of Gargoyles, casting and dialogue director Jamie Thomason recalled Brown’s audition.
“[The role of Goliath] came down to Clancy Brown and Keith [David], and they were both great. And when Clancy came in, he came in in character… and I’m sitting behind glass – safety glass, fortunately – because he was in character. [Begins growling] And he was looking at me like this [stops growling]. And I’d say, ‘Um, could you try maybe on this one…?’ [Growls affirmatively in response as Clancy Brown]. And he was great!”
Words can’t fully convey the fierceness of Thomason’s impression of Brown. And while Brown didn’t get the role, he did appear in 12 episodes of the show voicing the characters of Hakkon, Wolf, and Tomas Brod. Brown later voiced the classic Marvel villain, the Rhino, on Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman’s Spectacular Spider-Man show.
Today, Gargoyles is still widely considered one of the greatest animated television shows of all time. It follows a group of gargoyles who awaken after a thousand years in New York City. Its epic, dark tone and nuanced themes about good and evil fit in with other critically-acclaimed animated shows of the 1990s, like Batman: The Animated Series. Gargoyles continues to be popular among fans, with its story continuing in a comic book series published by Dynamite Entertainment.
