Captain Nemo not sinking anymore as new Nautilus series plots course to AMC

Good news for fans of Jules Verne's novels, and more specifically Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: the previously cancelled ten-episode series Nautilus has moved from Disney+ UK to AMC, where it will air in 2024.

The news (via Variety) arrived on October 30 with a press release. Ben Davis, executive vice president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios said: “Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes... We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”

The show was originally slated to air on Disney+ before the cost-cutting measures at the streamer axed it back in August this year, a fate shared with the planned TV adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, which ended up landing at Roku just a few weeks ago. In both cases, we're talking about recognizable and attractive IPs that can easily find an audience, so it makes sense that other streamers and networks would jump on the opportunities fast.

Back to Nautilus, AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as "a special television event" in 2024, though no premiere date has been announced yet. This new take on Jules Vernes' famous book will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played this time around by Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery). The cast of the show also includes Georgia Flood (American Princess), Thierry Fremont (Luther), and Céline Menville (Emily in Paris), with guest appearances from Richard E. Grant (Loki), Anna Torv (The Last of Us), and Noah Taylor (Life Aquatic).
