It’s time to get scared of the woods again, with news coming from CinemaCon that Lionsgate is resurrecting the Blair Witch… and they’re not doing it alone.
The studio announced plans to make a fourth movie in the Blair Witch series with producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse shingle, the production company behind such horror hits as Paramormal Activity, The Purge, M3GAN, and 2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s. It will launch a new years-long partnership between Lionsgate and Blumhouse. (The latter also has an ongoing deal with Universal Pictures.)
The original Blair Witch movie, 1999’s The Blair Witch Project, spawned a follow-up two years later — Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which dropped the “faux documentary” format for something closer to a traditional horror movie — which failed to replicate the success of the original. In 2016, director Adam Wingard was behind Blair Witch, a quasi-reboot of the franchise that also referenced elements of the original movie… but, noticeably, not Book of Shadows.
The new movie will be produced by Blum and Roy Lee, who’d previously worked on the 2016 Blair Witch project.
In a statement, Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson described the movie as “a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.” Blum added, “I’m a huge admirer of The Blair Witch Project, which brought the idea of found footage horror to mainstream audiences and became a true cultural phenomenon. I don’t think there would have been a ‘Paranormal Activity’ had there not first been a ‘Blair Witch,’ so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads.”
