It’s been more than a year since Amazon picked up Batman: Caped Crusader, an animated series based on DC’s Dark Knight that had been previously been cancelled by Max — but now we finally know when the show will debut, and have a better idea of just what it looks like.

Created by executive producers J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves (who directed 2022’s The Batman), and Bruce Timm, the man behind the 1990s animated Batman canon, Caped Crusader has been described as building on the classic Batman: The Animated Series, but reimagining the character and his world for a new audience. As if that line-up of talent wasn’t enough to get you interested, the show has WB Animation legends James Tucker and Sam Register attached as executive producers, alongside Daniel Pipski and Bad Robot’s Rachel Rusch Rich; Ed Brubaker, who has an extensive comic book history with Batman, is also onboard as head writer and executive producer.

What is Batman: Caped Crusader about?

The official logline of the series reads: “Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the BATMAN. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.”

Don’t know about you, but we’re very interested in the description of Batman as “something both more and less than human,” as well as the “deadly, unforeseen ramifications.” Talking to Entertainment Weekly, producers revealed that the show will be a period piece, set in the 1940s. ““James and I are both really big fans of movies from that era, so we decided to really lean into that in terms of the clothes, the cars, the architecture, and the level of technology,” Bruce Timm explained. “Early on, we decided there would be no computers and no cell phones. That changed everything.” 

Looks like this might be an interesting new take on the classic mythos.

What does Batman: Caped Crusader look like?

Prime Video has released the following images from the show — showcasing a retro design sense that combines the classic Bruce Timm look with something closer to the (beloved by us, at least) Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series from 2008 through 2011. Color us very curious about how great the finished show is going to look.

When will Batman: Caped Crusader debut?

Prime Video will release all 10 episodes of the show’s first season — it’s already been ordered for two, with more potentially available should the show become a hit — on August 1.
