Barbie will feature a joke about the Snyder Cut
No, the Snyder Cut has not faded from public conversation. It's still alive-- apparently even in Barbieland.
In 2017, Justice League director Zack Snyder had to step down from directorial duties due to a personal tragedy, and Joss Whedon took his place. The film came out to a lukewarm reception both at the box office and amongst fans, many of whom believed that Zack Snyder's original vision of the film would have surpassed Whedon's.
Thus began the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, which seemed to swarm the internet for years - even though there was no actual Snyder Cut to release (Snyder had not worked on the film long enough to have a releasable cut). And yet, against all odds and after years of campaigning, the Snyder Cut was given its day in the spotlight. Well, of course, it needed to be made, and in 2020, Snyder reunited with the cast to shoot new footage and cut together a 242 minute version of the film to be relased on Max (then HBO Max).
Now if all of that sounds like the set-up to the perfect joke, you're not alone with that thought. Apparently, there will be a joke in the upcoming Greta Gerwig Barbie film that will poke some fun at the Snyder Cut. Now, just a peek or two into this community online would prevent most people from ever wanting to (even with good humor) draw the ire of a large group of easily angered fans, but Greta Gerwig has proven herself to be a director who swings big.
As to whether she's ready to handle the inevitable (and probably pretty loud) backlash to the joke, Gerwig said in a video interview with Fandom, "No! No! Not at all!"
We wish Greta Gerwig much luck with this endeavor.
Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023. Buy tickets on Fandango or Atom Tickets.
