"As a crew!": Our Flag Means Death cast members share how lockdown shaped their tight bond
“We were literally stuck together!”
The camraderie between the cast members of Our Flag Means Death holds strength beyond the screen. So how does an ensemble of relentless gay pirates manage to work so well together? Well, by being far from home while filming a series during a pandemic.
In 2020, while the world was in lockdown, the crew from Our Flag Means Death worked hard to develop their first season. The series instantly gained a cult following during a time when the world required connection. When asked how the cast was able to build such comradery while filming the first season during the pandemic, actor Kristian Nairn (Wee John Feeney) jokingly replied, “We were literally stuck together!”
Cast member Nathan Foad confirmed, “When you’re filming a show like that, particularly in Covid, it does force you [together], because you’re trying to keep outside socializing to a minimum because you have to keep everyone safe.” Con O’Neill (Izzy Hands) recounted how actors often forge relationships quickly on set, adding “Often you’re creating characters who have been together for a long time, so you’re just instantaneously connecting, and Covid kind of reinstated what we’ve always done anyway.”
It’s safe to say that we're looking forward to seeing how these real-life connections impact the much anticipated second season of Our Flag Means Death.
