One of the most remarkable things about One Piece has always been its longevity. For 25 years, the anime has been a weekly fixture of the industry, with a release schedule that defies time and logic. Now, over 1000 episodes into the series, Netflix has decided what we really need is more One Piece.
And you know what? They’re right. Not only is the streamer hard at work on their live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s iconic manga, but they’re also planning a remake of the anime while the original anime is still running. Titled The One Piece, this new series is still in early development but we do know a few details that have gotten us plenty excited for the show.
What is Netflix’s The One Piece series?
Technically, The One Piece is a second anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, making it totally separate from the first adaptation that has been airing since October 1999. While the original One Piece anime was produced by Toei Animation for Japanese TV broadcast, The One Piece is being produced by Studio Wit. Wit has already made its mark on anime by producing the first few seasons of Attack on Titan and half the episodes of Spy x Family.
When will The One Piece come out?
Since it was announced in December 2023, there have only been a few announcements about how The One Piece is coming together and none of them have included a release date. At the moment, we don’t know when it will come out on Netflix. With the long animation process, it is difficult to even speculate at this point. Certainly no earlier than 2025 and there is a chance it will get pushed back into 2026. We simply don’t know enough to guess.
Who is working on The One Piece?
If you’re after casting announcements for Netflix’s One Piece remake, it is still far too early for that. So far, we have only had confirmation of some key staff working on the anime at Studio Wit. The names include directors and animators from Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, so they’ll certainly be able to blend the emotional beats of the story with the high-energy action that One Piece is known for.
The staff of The One Piece are:
- Mashashi Koizuka – Director
- Hideaki Abe – Assisstent Director
- Kyoji Asano – Character Designer and Chief Animation Director
- Takatoshi Honda – Character Designer and Chief Animation Director
- Taku Kishimoto – Series Scripts
- Yasuhiro Kajino – Image Board and Creature Design
- Eri Taguchi – Prop Design
- Shuhei Fukuda – Action Animator
- Ken Imaizumi – Action Animator
- Tomonori Kuroda – Art Director
- Ryoma Kawamura – Animation Producer
Where can I watch The One Piece remake?
While we don’t know when it is being released, we have a pretty good idea of where we’ll be able to watch The One Piece. The remake of the iconic anime will be coming to Netflix, though it isn’t clear yet if it will get a traditional broadcast in Japan alongside streaming. It also isn’t clear if it will release episodes one at a time or if Netflix will release them in batches like most of its shows.
