After DC and Marvel's team-up, now Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are partnering to offer a combined streaming bundle

As if Hulu and Disney+ bundling together wasn’t enough, news has broken that Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are partnering to launch a combined streaming bundle this summer that will include Hulu, Disney+ and Max.

Details on the bundle remain vague, but the announcement was accompanied by statements from executives at both WBD and Disney. Joe Earley, Disney Entertainment’s President of Direct to Consumer said, “On the heels of the very successful launch of Hulu on Disney+, this new bundle with Max will offer subscribers even more choice and value. This incredible new partnership puts subscribers first, giving them access to blockbuster films, originals, and three massive libraries featuring the very best brands and entertainment in streaming today.”

JB Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, added. “This new offering delivers for consumers the greatest collection of entertainment for the best value in streaming, and will help drive incremental subscribers and much stronger retention. Offering this unprecedented entertainment value for fans across all the complimentary genres these three services offer, presents a powerful new roadmap for the future of the industry.”

The bundled package would offer content from many of the biggest names in entertainment, including Marvel, DC, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros., A24, Searchlight, ABC, CNN, Food Network, HBO, FX, and Disney. Pricing and launch date for the bundle are being kept under wraps as of writing, with both companies promising details “in the coming months,” but the bundles will be available via Hulu, Max, and Disney+’s websites, and will be available in both ad-supported and ad-free plans.

While the idea of WBD and Disney coming together to bundle streaming platforms might have seemed unthinkable even a year ago, it should be noted that the two companies initially started working together in February when it was announced that Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery would be creating an all-new sports streaming platform together for launch in fall 2024. That news came after WBD chief David Zaslav had openly moved away from the proprietary hold on WBD content on Max alone, and spoken out about the value of licensing out content to other streaming services; it’s an idea that Disney CEO Bob Iger has recently started discussing openly, as well.

What this means for the end consumer is, ideally, a lower-cost package for access to some of the biggest names in entertainment today. Quite how much lower — and all the other important details, as well, including how shareholders of both companies are going to react to this team-up — is something that we’re going to have to wait and discover over the next few weeks. After all, summer 2024 isn’t that far away…
